Three days after the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, performer Nina Simone and her band played at the Westbury Music Festival on Long Island, N.Y. They performed "Why? (The King of Love is Dead)," a song they had just learned, written by their bass player Gene Taylor in reaction to King's death.
Karl Jenkins, better known as Philadelphian hip-hop artist Dice Raw, has written and produced The King of Love, a theatrical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Henry Box Brown was a slave who read and wrote poetry, practiced magic, sang in a church choir and was a hypnotist. He performed all around the world once freed, and publicly expressed his political views.

Blues for Mister Charlie, tragedy in three acts by James Baldwin, produced and published in 1964. ... “Mister Charlie” is a slang term for a white man. The story concerns Richard Henry, a black man who returns to the Southern town of his birth to begin a new life and recover from drug addiction.
