The Repertory Theatre
Freedom Repertory Theatre was the professional theatre company of Freedom created in 1993 by Artistic Director Dr. Walter Dallas. The purpose of the Rep was to invigorate the American theatre through its excellent productions that illuminated the multifaceted African American experience, and to serve as a learning laboratory and a model of excellence for our Performing Arts Training Program.Freedom Rep usually produced four productions each year in the new state-of-the-art, 299-seat John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre. The Rep's productions featured extraordinary actors from Philadelphia, and as far away as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Artistic Director Dallas selected a season that would consist of a variety of work:& dramas, comedies, musicals, important plays from the past, and exciting new ones. Freedom Rep was dedicated to developing new plays for the African-American canon and had commissioned work from writers Ntozake Shange, Lynn Nottage and others.
